They say Spider was living in a village by the ocean.
She had moved East,
in her old age
to a place many older animals lived.
But Spider
had never lived anywhere other
than the western desert.
In her days here,
she spun webs
from her memories
of home.
She looked up at the sky
and remembered how night came
in the desert.
Suddenly,
and in purple.
How the moon lit the horizon.
And what a beautiful horizon it was!
Warm and rusty,
pierced
by buttes and cacti.
Spider loved telling her stories
and spinning her webs.
She spoke of the pueblos,
her coyote friends,
and their houses in the
sides of cliffs.
But these memories soon began
to be too far for Spider
to reach.
She stopped spinning her webs
and became very sick.
Her heart ached for her home.
